Description

No. 14 Mealcheapen Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the late 18th century, with later additions and alterations, including a ground-floor shop front from around 1836 to 1899 and a 20th-century attic dormer. The building is constructed of pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond, featuring gauged red brick arches and a plain tile roof.

The exterior consists of three storeys with an attic and two first-floor windows. The first and second floors have 8/8 flush sash windows, all topped with flat arches made of gauged brick. There is a three-course band at the second floor, and the modillion cornice has been renewed. The attic dormer contains a casement window. On the ground floor, there are outer panelled pilasters and glazed shop windows set on panelled plinths, which are canted towards an off-centre right door that has a part-glazed overlight, along with a panelled fascia and cornice, and a blind box.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, an earlier house was rebuilt on this site in the late 18th century. Mealcheapen Street was particularly prosperous in the 16th and early 17th centuries, primarily serving as a retail area due to its proximity to the Cornmarket, which contributed to the establishment of several large inns. The listed buildings in Mealcheapen Street are part of a group that includes those in Cornmarket and the Church of St Swithun on Church Street.
