House, now shop with office over. 1767 for William Stokes with later additions and alterations including c1980s ground-floor shop front. Purplish-red brick in Flemish bond with rubbed red brick flat arches and stone sills and keystones; timber cornice; plain tile roof with left end brick stack. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic, 3 first-floor windows. First and second floors have near-flush-frame 6/6 sashes with sills and flat arches of rubbed brick with keystones. Crowning cornice. Attic roof dormer has hipped roof and casement window. Ground floor has glazed shop front with glazed door, fascia has outer corbel brackets on panelled pilasters, ovolo-moulded cornice. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: a fire of 1767 destroyed the C17 house on this site, it was rebuilt for William Stokes and let to Charles West Roberts. Mealcheapen Street flourished particularly in the C16 and early 17 predominantly as a retail outlet; Hughes: 'it was the proximity to the Cornmarket that gave the street much of its prosperity and led to the establishment of a number of large inns.' One build with Nos 4 and 5 Mealcheapen Street (qv). All the listed buildings in Mealcheapen Street form a group together with the listed buildings in Cornmarket and with Church of St Swithun, Church Street (qqv).
