Description
No. 6 Mealcheapen Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with an office above. It was built in 1767 for William Stokes and has undergone later additions and alterations, including a ground-floor shop front added around the 1980s. The building is constructed from purplish-red brick in Flemish bond, featuring rubbed red brick flat arches along with stone sills and keystones. It has a timber cornice and a plain tile roof with a brick stack at the left end.
The exterior consists of three storeys plus an attic, with three first-floor windows. The first and second floors have near-flush-frame 6/6 sash windows, which are set with sills and flat arches made of rubbed brick with keystones. The building is topped with a crowning cornice. The attic features a dormer with a hipped roof and a casement window. The ground floor showcases a glazed shop front with a glazed door, and the fascia is supported by outer corbel brackets on panelled pilasters, topped with an ovolo-moulded cornice.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, a fire in 1767 destroyed a 17th-century house that previously stood on this site, after which it was rebuilt for William Stokes and let to Charles West Roberts. Mealcheapen Street thrived particularly in the 16th and early 17th centuries, primarily as a retail area. Its proximity to the Cornmarket contributed to its prosperity, leading to the establishment of several large inns. The listed buildings in Mealcheapen Street are part of a group that includes those in Cornmarket and the Church of St Swithun on Church Street.
