Description
23A, B and C Angel Place is a warehouse that was formerly part of Lewis Clarke's brewery and has been converted into shops and offices. It was built around 1836 to 1850 and has undergone later alterations and restorations, including the conversion to shop units on the ground floor in the 1980s. The building features reddish-brown brick with ashlar and stucco on the ground floor, with quoins, sills, and cornices. The window arches are made of red brick, and the roof is hipped with plain tiles, topped by a truncated brick stack at the right end.
The structure is L-shaped, with the right part projecting. It stands three storeys tall and has a symmetrical facade with two sets of two first-floor windows. The ground floor exhibits rustication, while the first floor has a pulvinated band on the right part and full-height quoins. The windows from left to right on the first floor include a 6/6 sash and three tripartite windows with a 6/6 sash between two 2/2 sashes. The second floor has 3/3 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills and flat arches made of gauged brick. The building is topped with a frieze and a moulded cornice.
On the ground floor, there are glazed shop fronts on the left side. To the right, there are two tripartite windows with a 6/6 sash between two 2/2 sashes, featuring voussoired flat arches. An off-centre entrance on the right part consists of a 6-flush-beaded-panel door with an overlight and panelled reveals. The left return of the building has 6/6 and 3/3 sashes. The interior has not been inspected. This building forms a group with the Tramps and the former Angel Street Congregational Church on Angel Place.
