Description
No. 58 Broad Street is likely a house and shop, now functioning solely as a shop. It dates from around 1800 and has undergone later additions and alterations, including a ground-floor shop front from the 1980s. The building is constructed of pinkish-red brick in Flemish bond, featuring flat arches made of red gauged brick and stone keystones, with a concealed roof. It stands three storeys high and has one first-floor window. The first and second floors have replacement one-over-one sash windows in nearly flush frames, also with flat arches of gauged brick and raised keystones that have incised decoration and cornices. At the top, there is a low, coped parapet. The ground floor is fitted with a plate glass shop front and a glazed entrance.
The interior of the ground floor has been renewed, and the rest of the interior has not been inspected. Historically, by the 16th century, Broad Street was the second most important commercial street after High Street. It was a key route through the city from the Worcester Bridge and housed several significant traders and at least two inns. Some houses in Broad Street are known to date back to the 17th century or earlier, including Nos 32, 40, 41, and 57.
All the listed buildings on Broad Street form a significant group, including Nos 10, 10A, 11, 12, 18, 19, 29, 32-36 (consecutive), 40, 41, 43-49 (consecutive), 51-63 (consecutive), 69, 70, and the Church of All Saints. Nos 57 and 58 were previously recorded under the same reference number but are now listed separately.
