Description

Number 3 and Number 4 House are a pair of identical houses dating to 1867-68, designed by Charles F Hansom of Clifton, who also designed the College building itself. They are constructed of red brick with paler brick detailing to the gable tops, and have tile roofs and stone dressings. The houses are three storeys high with attics, and feature a half-hipped roof on the left-hand portion. The left house has one window over three windows on each of the three storeys, with arched heads to the first-floor window reveals. A doorway projects forward centrally, set back, and features a carved parapet. The right house has an oriel window at roof level above two windows above three windows; arched heads to the reveals incorporate ornamental voussoirs, with a string course separating the ground and first floors. The gable on the right side has a two-light window above a three-light window, both with arched reveals containing ornamental voussoirs. The ground floor features a canted bay with a pierced parapet. String courses are present between the storeys. A tower is positioned to the side, and three gabled dormers are visible.
