Description
The building at 2 and 3 Church Street is a pair of late 18th-century houses, now offices, constructed as part of the St. John’s Square development. The brick construction is accentuated by stone dressings and a slate roof. The houses are double-depth and extend over three storeys with a basement. They feature a three-window range, with a sill band to the first floor and a returned top cornice on the left-hand side. The basement level has windows with paired 8-pane sashes in chamfered reveals, and a tripartite sash window. Ground and first floor windows have rubbed brick flat arches and 12-pane sashes, with a four-pane horn. The second floor includes two altered 9-pane sashes and a four-pane horned sash. An elliptical-arched carriage entry is located on the left-hand end. A round-headed entrance to the right has reeded pilasters, an archivolt, a fanlight with radiating glazing bars, and a glazed door. A similar entrance is present on the left-hand end. A further round-headed entrance is positioned on the left side, within an aedicule featuring Doric columns with fluted capitals, an entablature with oval paterae and fluted sides, an open pediment, and a patera above a fanlight with decorative glazing bars and a six-fielded-panel door. There is a coped gable with a projecting stack and a cross-axial stack. The building is surrounded by spear-headed area railings. The interior was not inspected.
