Description
The Granville Street Memorial is situated in the north-east part of Witton Old Jewish Cemetery, which is next to the municipal Witton Cemetery. This granite obelisk was erected in 1876 and consists of four sections. It features a low square base that supports a square plinth, topped by a tall, two-tier shaft with a pyramidal cap. On the west face of the base of the shaft, there is an inscription that reads:
THIS MONUMENT/MARKS THE PLACE WHERE/THE BODIES REMOVED FROM/THE JEWISH CEMETERY NEAR/GRANVILLE STREET/WERE RE-INTERRED IN/5636-1876
Additionally, the west face of the stone plinth has a Hebrew inscription, which is an acronym for "May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of life."
The history of the cemetery at Granville Street dates back to around 1766, making it the second Jewish cemetery in Birmingham. It closed around 1825 due to railway development, and in 1876, some of the bodies were relocated to Witton Old Jewish Cemetery. The Granville Street Memorial was established to commemorate the re-interment of these remains.
The memorial is surrounded by low level wrought iron railings.
