Description

Kite’s Nest is a farmhouse dating to 1788/9, built by Francis Hiorn (1744-89) for his own use and that of Richard Kyte. It was described as “newly erected” in Hiorn’s will. The farmhouse is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with three storeys and a single-storey flanking wing to each side. It has a pyramidal slate roof with a projecting modillion eaves cornice. The flanking wings have lean-to roofs hidden behind shaped parapets. The central three bays are articulated, with a range of casements featuring glazing bars in segmental-headed openings. A single casement with glazing bars is located in each of the flanking bays, set within blind arches. A pedimental gable is present at the rear. The building is a rustic interpretation of Asgill House in Richmond, designed by Sir Robert Taylor in 1753.
