Description

This is a chest tomb and headstone located approximately 6 meters southeast of the chancel of the Church of St James in Long Marston. The chest tomb dates from 1640 and is made of ashlar. It commemorates John Cooper, who died in 1643. The tomb features a plain chest with a chamfered plinth and a moulded edge on the top slab. The sides have plain balusters and a panel that includes an inscription noting that John Cooper was the founder of a school in Long Marston. The headstone, dating from around 1700, has a cartouche with a scrolling frame and two cherubs, along with a faint inscription.
