Description

A group of five headstones, dating from 1700 to 1740, is located approximately 13.5 meters north of the chancel of the Church of St James in Long Marston. The headstones are made of ashlar and are arranged in a row, with three headstones in the middle, one in front, and one at the back.

From north to south, the headstones include: Anne Mumford, who died in 1739 or 1740, featuring a segmental top and a well-crafted inscription within a low-relief scrollwork border; Richard Mumford, who died in 1734, with a shaped top, a low-relief scrollwork border adorned with a fleur-de-lys at the top, and a good inscription that includes a verse; and Jane Mumford, who died in 1720, which has a shaped top, a shield with a winged figure, incised scrollwork, and a slightly damaged inscription.

Behind Jane Mumford's headstone is Sarah Lee, who died in 1700. This headstone has a shaped top featuring a skull, coffin, bones, and a pick and shovel, with foliage at the ends, an enriched border, and a good inscription. In front of Richard Mumford's headstone is a 19th-century headstone that is not of special architectural interest.
