Description
The milestone at Harewood, located northwest of the traffic roundabout on Leek Road (A522), is a mid-18th century stone marker with an early 19th century cast iron name plate attached to its front. The dressed stone features a rounded top and is inscribed with "LEEK 9 CHEADLE 1." An Ordnance Survey bench mark is cut into the upper part of the stone.
This milestone is believed to have been erected in the 1760s as part of a series marking the turnpike route from Wetley Rocks through Cheadle and Tean to Rochester. The name plate was likely added in the 1820s, and by 1840, the stone was included in the consolidated Cheadle turnpike.
The milestone is recognized for its well-preserved condition and historical significance, illustrating the expansion of the road network following the 1773 general Turnpike Act, which mandated the recording of mileage. It is one of several 18th century milestones with early 19th century plates that denote the turnpike between Wetley Rocks and Cheadle, and it has group value with other milestones along this route.
