Description
The Central Block of Adams' Grammar School, originally built in 1656, was largely rebuilt and restored in 1821. This prominent building features an ashlar central block that stands two storeys tall, divided by plain pilasters into five bays. It has three semi-circular headed windows and an arcaded ground storey, which was formerly an open loggia but now includes five glazed semi-circular headed doors leading into an anti-chamber. The parapet has an inset balustrade at the center, and the tiled roof is topped with a cupola that has an original clock face.
Flanking the central block are red brick side wings that rise three storeys and each feature three sash windows. Each wing has a restored or early 19th-century stuccoed pilaster doorcase with a segmental pediment. Although the interior has been generally altered, the left-hand wing, known as the Headmaster's House, retains a good original staircase. The building is set back from the street within its grounds.
