Description
The charnel house, located approximately 30 metres to the north-west of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, was built around 1903-1904. It features a ground floor made of roughly dressed grey sandstone with ashlar dressings, and a first floor that is timber framed and weatherboarded. The roof is hipped and covered with plain tiles.
The building stands two storeys tall, with the ground floor showcasing chamfered coping, a chamfered square window to the north, and a doorway to the west. There are also narrow openings in the coping on the east and west sides. The first floor has a roof that extends to form a canopy on the west side, with joists that have shaped ends resting on a stone substructure. There are a pair of low boarded doors to the east, which are fitted with strap hinges.
Inside, the structure contains two king post trusses. The charnel house is integrated into the churchyard wall to the north of the church, which is not included in this listing. This building is a well-designed example of its type.
