Description

The Firs Farmhouse is a red brick farmhouse dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed in Flemish bond with a plain tile roof. The main block is two storeys and has an attic, with a wing extending to the rear left and a later infill to the rear right, presenting a three-bay facade. The central doorway is a part-glazed wooden door, framed by a segmentally arched recess and flanked on the ground and first floors by segmentally arched three-light windows, now fitted with 20th-century iron casements. Dentilled eaves run along the top of the building. The roof has upstanding verges with brick copings and projecting end stacks. The left return shows a wing with two altered windows, each set beneath a wider segmental arch.

Inside, the ground floor on the right and the rear wing contain basket-arched fireplace recesses. Original beamed ceilings are present, and the date "1760" is set out in nailheads on a spine beam in the ground floor right room. The staircase in the rear wing features square newels and rectangular rods, rising to the attic. Cast-iron fire baskets are found in the first-floor rooms.
