Description
Highley War Memorial is a memorial cross located in the churchyard of St Mary, Highley, unveiled in 1921. It is made of red sandstone with limestone plaques. The cross features a loosely Celtic design with a tapered shaft that rises from a rusticated cairn and stands on a stepped platform. The cross has a wheel head, and the west side includes a raised border around the cross head and shaft. The central panel displays a sword carved in relief, accompanied by the words ‘PRO / PATRIA’ also carved in relief.
The base of the memorial is rusticated and features a central plaque with the inscription: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND / IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE / FOLLOWING WHO SACRIFICED / THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT / EUROPEAN WAR 1914-1918’. Names of the fallen are inscribed below this plaque and on an additional plaque on the east side. The eastern face concludes the list of names with the words ‘THINK ONLY THIS OF US / THAT THERE’S SOME CORNER OF A FOREIGN LAND / THAT IS FOR EVER ENGLAND’. On the north side, there is a plaque that reads ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN / MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS / PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN / THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM / DURING THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945’.
