Description

The Gardener's Cottage is an orangery or plant house that was converted into a cottage, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with the conversion occurring around the mid 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof behind a parapet, which was originally hipped at the rear with a central valley. There is a brick axial stack.

Originally, the orangery was a single-cell rectangular building with three bays of large windows at the front. After its conversion into a cottage in the mid to late 19th century, a floor was added, and a small wing was built at the back, all designed in a classical style.

The exterior is two storeys high, whereas it was originally a single storey. The symmetrical front has a three-bay centre that projects forward, featuring a moulded stone pediment and cornice topped with urns. There are three full-height windows with gauged-brick flat arches, now altered by the inserted floor, and two-light sashes with glazing bars. The centre ground floor has been converted into a doorway with sidelights. Across the ground floor is a five-bay wooden trellis verandah. At the rear, there is a 19th-century gable-ended wing with a sixteen-pane sash window in the end wall, along with flanking outshuts.

The interior reflects the 19th-century conversion into a cottage, with an inserted floor and partitions.
