Description
The Gables is a farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, with some alterations and additions from the mid to late 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure with plastered and painted brick infill, and parts have been rebuilt and extended in painted brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles.
The building has a T-plan layout, with a hall range consisting of two framed bays and a projecting cross wing to the right that has three framed bays. It is one storey high with an attic. There is an external brick end stack on the left, an integral brick end stack at the front of the cross wing, and an integral brick lateral stack on the 19th-century rear wing.
On the left side, there is a large 17th-century timber-framed full dormer featuring a pair of 2-light wooden casements, a moulded wooden cill from a former 17th-century window, and a jettied gable with a moulded bressumer. Additionally, there is a central small gabled eaves dormer with a 2-light casement. The hall range includes a pair of 2-light wooden-framed metal casements on the left, a small 2-light wooden casement on the right, and a roughly central boarded door with a gabled porch.
The cross wing has a small 20th-century two-light metal casement on the left and a small-paned 2-light metal casement on the left-hand return front. The front features a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and V-struts, and there is a fire insurance plate beneath the left-hand dormer. On the right-hand return front, there are two gabled eaves dormers with 2-light wooden casements. The three-window front includes 19th and 20th-century three-light wooden and metal casements.
At the rear, there is a 19th-century two-storey brick wing that incorporates a granary, which has a boarded loft door accessed by a flight of external stone steps. The interior has not been inspected.
