Description

The former stable, now a store, is located approximately 10 metres to the south-west of Ightfield Hall. It likely dates from the late 17th century or 18th century and incorporates earlier materials. The structure features a timber frame with red brick on a brick plinth and a red brick gable end, topped with a graded slate roof. The framing consists of large rectangular panels, with two extending from the sole plate to the wall plate, and it has two framed bays. The building is one storey with a loft.

On the north-east front, there is a 4-pane loft window to the right, and a pair of central raised ground-floor windows, one with one light and the other with two lights. There are boarded doors on both the left and right sides. The left-hand gable end features a two-light wooden casement in the attic and two small ground-floor openings to the left. Inside, there is a chamfered spine beam in the left-hand ground-floor room. The roof has pairs of purlins, straight wind braces, and a ridge piece.

The truss includes a collar and a cut-through tie-beam with a moulded lower edge, likely with early 19th-century brick infill and a pair of small dovecote openings at the apex. The right-hand gable end also has a collar and tie-beam truss. It is suggested that the hewn corner post and moulded tie beam may have domestic origins, possibly reused from a previous house on the site of the current Ightfield Hall, which is a brick building dating back to the late 17th century. While it is possible that the stable was once a domestic building, the type of framing appears too late for that purpose. The building is situated adjacent to Ightfield Hall, within a moated site.
