Description

The Old Rectory, now a house, was built around 1740 with a later addition in 1793, incorporating an earlier core. It is constructed of brick, with horizontal bands and dentil eaves to the front, parts being on a stone rubble plinth. The roof is tiled with ashlar-coped gables to the front, and a slate hipped roof to the rear, with projecting brick end stacks. The building follows a square double-pile plan, comprising an earlier front range and a larger later phase to the rear.

The north-facing front is three stories high with a cellar, featuring a 5-window arrangement of 6/6 sash windows, with 6/3 sashes at the second floor and 9/9 sashes at ground floor, flanking a central 4-panelled door with a 2-light overlight. All windows have brick segmental arches, moulded cases, and no sills. The east-facing side return has a single-window range of a 2-light first-floor casement with a 6/6 sash above, and a 2-light casement with a top light at ground floor, all with brick segmental arches and stone sills. The opposite side has a single 6/6 sash with a brick segmental arch. The south-facing rear has a three-story, 5-window range of 3/6 sashes at the second floor and 6/6 sashes at ground floor, all with moulded cases, brick segmental arches, and no sills. The central doorcase features plain recessed panelled pilasters, a recessed spandrel, a flat cornice, a canopy over, and a 6-panelled door with raised panels and a fanlight with radial bars.

The interior contains substantial late 18th century features, including a staircase. Coalbrookdale fireplaces are preserved in many rooms. The upper stairway features trompe l'oeil rusticated stone decoration.
