Description

The lychgate and churchyard wall adjoining the Church of the Holy Trinity to the north-west were built around 1878 by William Eden Nesfield. The lychgate features half-height walls made of tooled yellow and grey sandstone ashlar, with a timber-framed superstructure and a hipped plain tile roof. The walls have moulded copings and moulded arched-braced openings, supported by curved brackets at the front and back. Side openings are adorned with wooden balustrading that has billet-ornamented rails. At the front, there is a pair of wooden gates with two trefoiled segmental-headed openings, complete with wrought-iron finials and strap hinges. Inside, there are three stone steps leading up to the roof, which is supported by collar trusses and rafters with shaped ends, and features a plastered soffit. A copper plate on the right side is inscribed: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD, AND IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF FRANCES ELIZABETH HEYWOOD-LONSDALE, THIS LAMP / IS PLACED HERE BY THE PARISHONERS OF CALVERHALL. EASTER 1903 / "LET YOUR LIGHT SO SHINE BEFORE MEN, THAT THEY MAY SEE YOUR GOOD WORKS, / AND GLORIFY YOUR FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN." The lamp was not in place at the time of the survey in October 1986. The flanking churchyard walls are also made of sandstone ashlar, featuring chamfered and moulded coping, and were formerly topped with wrought-iron railings. To the right, there is a short section of curved wall connecting the lychgate to the tower of the Church of the Holy Trinity, which was also designed by Nesfield.
