Description
The gatehouse located south-west of Lower Brockhampton House dates from the late 15th century. It features an exposed timber frame and has a square plan with two storeys. The upper storey projects on curved brackets. The structure has close-set uprights with diagonal braces at the corners, and the angle-posts are topped with moulded heads. The gables are adorned with bargeboards that have carved foliage. There are open archways with four-centred heads in the north and south walls. The original studded door includes cross-patterns, strap-hinges, and a wicket. Lower Brockhampton House, the gatehouse, and the ruins of the chapel together create a cohesive historical group.
