Description

The Maclean War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1920, made of Portland stone. It features a plain Latin cross mounted on a square plinth, which sits on a three-stepped square base. The memorial stands approximately 4.2 meters high.

The main inscription is carved in incised lettering on the west face of the plinth, stating: "TO THE PRAISE OF GOD/ AND IN GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF/ (4 NAMES)/ 1914–1919/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The east face commemorates all those who gave their lives from this parish, noting that their names are on a tablet in the church, and includes two additional names.

On the south face of the plinth, a bronze plaque with raised lettering indicates that the monument was unveiled in April 1920 by Mrs. Frances Maclean, widow of General Henry Maclean of Halesend, in memory of their sons Ivan and Alec, and grandsons Frank Abbott and Hector Maclean, whose parents were married in Cradley Church. It also mentions Lieutenant Peel Corbin as a family friend and Corporal Harry Lane, who assisted Captain Ivan Maclean, the Regimental Medical Officer to the 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade, in rescuing and tending to wounded men who had fallen ahead of the front line.
