Description

9 High Street is a shop with flats above, built in the early 19th century and featuring a late-19th century shop front. The building is likely constructed of brick with a stucco finish on the front and has a parapeted roof covered in slate.

It is a narrow, three-storey structure with a double-depth plan that extends to the rear. The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with a one-window front facing northeast. The first floor has eight-over-eight pane hornless sash windows set in recessed surrounds with projecting cills, while the second floor features four-over-four pane sashes in plain reveals, also with projecting cills. The ground floor showcases a late-19th century shop front that includes a plate-glass window in a shallow bay and a six-panel door, with the upper four panels being glazed.

The interior has not been inspected, but documentary evidence mentions a late-Victorian stained-glass lancet window and a decorative fireplace with a hob.

Bromyard, where the building is located, is a small market town first recorded around 840. No. 9 High Street lies on one of the main streets in the town, known as Novus Vicus in the late 13th century and as Newe Streate in 1575. The street appears to have been fully developed by the early 17th century, although some plots have been redeveloped since then.

This building is designated for its architectural significance as a well-preserved example of a modest yet well-proportioned late-Georgian structure, its intact early-19th century facade with a later shop front, and its group value with nearby listed buildings along High Street.
