Description
The monument to the Skipworth family is located in the graveyard of the Church of St. Mary, approximately 12 metres from the east end. This chest tomb, dating from around 1850, is possibly designed by the architect Butterfield. It is constructed of ashlar stone in a high Gothic style and is divided into four panels, each marked by a stepped and decorated buttress. Each panel features an inscription dedicated to a member of the Skipworth family and is topped with a trefoil-headed arch. Above the arches, there is an inscribed frieze, and the spandrels between the arch and frieze display hobnail decoration. The end panel is specifically dedicated to George Skipworth, who died in 1857 and commissioned Butterfield to make alterations to the church in 1853.
