Description

Fenton Hall is a small country house dating from 1597, with later additions in 1642, the early 19th century, and the 20th century. The building is constructed of blue lias coursed rubble with limestone dressings, red brick, and rendering, topped with slate roofs. The late 16th century to early 17th century cross wing to the south features stone coped gables, kneelers, and finials, along with large red brick tripartite and single wall stacks on the south return. The early 19th century service wing to the north has a lower pitched roof and two stacks.

The cross wing includes a single three-light transom and mullion window on the ground floor, which has a datestone above that may be reused, inscribed with "1597 P.L." and a coat of arms. Above this window, there is a three-light mullion window and a four-light mullion gable window with a taller central two lights. To the north, there is a two-storey, three-bay early 19th century range with a blocked central doorway flanked by single windows, and three additional windows above, all featuring glazing bar sashes and segmental heads. At the rear, some 17th century sections of wall and windows remain from the original hall that was burnt down in 1750. The interior roof space above these remnants contains burnt timbers from the 16th or 17th century. Inside the eastern ground floor room of the cross wing, "1642 S.R." is scratched in the plaster near the window.
