Description

The seaside shelter, built around 1910, is part of Lord Scarborough’s development of the foreshore and is located 150 meters south of the Jubilee Clock Tower. It features earlier cast-iron railings from 1875-77.

The shelter is constructed from timber and sits on a brick plinth with half-glazed screens, topped with a tiled roof and plastic guttering. It is framed by railings made of cast-iron posts and horizontal tubular metal rails. The shelter has a rectangular plan and is a single-storey structure with three bays. Each bay is defined by timber pilasters, with pairs of half-timber and half-glazed panels in between, separated by two angle-arched openings. The glazing consists of small multi-paned lights throughout. Wooden brackets with subtle detailing extend from the pilasters to support the deeply overhanging eaves, tongue and groove timber soffits, and the hipped, tiled roof.

Inside, the open-sided shelter features back-to-back slatted wooden seating, divided by a half-timber and half-glazed panelled screen along the center. Additional screens across the width of the shelter create two separate bays on each side, with one at each end. The side bays have seating around three sides, while the end bays have a single run of seating. The slatted seating is supported by wooden supports, and the ceiling is finished with tongue and groove timber panelling.
