Description
The Great Barn at Newhouse Grange is a large medieval aisled barn dating from the 14th to 15th century. It is primarily timber-framed, with brick infilling from the 18th and 19th centuries, and features a plain-tiled roof. The gable end has paired doors with chamfered lintel ashlar surrounds, while the long elevation includes three sets of wide double doors. The barn consists of seven bays, with a high brick plinth inside. Square pillars on high stone bases support spurs to the wall plate and are braced to a collar, from which queen struts rise to a higher collar. Each bay has a secondary truss with a wall post that supports a cambered truss rising to a higher collar. The common rafters are held by four sets of pullins, and there are wind braces in the first, third, and fourth sections of the roof slope. The barn lacks a ridge piece and has one complete partition to the east, framed in close-studded panels, featuring a tie beam and collars. The main roof has a continuous sweep over the aisles and is hipped with gablets at each end. It is said to have been the storehouse for the Leicestershire portion of the produce belonging to Merevale Abbey, as noted in White's Leicester from 1863.
