Description

The obelisk at the junction of Temple Road and South Parade is a structure from the 1820s. It features a tapering gritstone shaft divided into two sections, standing approximately 3.5 metres high, and is set on a gritstone plinth. The shaft has painted lettering on three sides, displaying the inscription 'TEMPLE HOTEL'. This obelisk is depicted in an engraving from 1830 and was specifically built to mark the location of the Temple Hotel, which is a listed building (grade II) but not visible from the road.
