Description
This is a First World War memorial with later additions to commemorate the Second World War, erected in 1921 by W Milburn and Son. The memorial stands at the southern end of the village green and is constructed from Portland stone for the memorial cross, millstone grit for the plinth, and Yorkstone paving for the podium.
The memorial consists of a Latin cross raised on a square plinth and further elevated on a Yorkstone podium. The front of the cross features a carved crucifix and a dedication panel reading "TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF / CLIFFORD / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914 ’ 1918." This dedication panel is bordered by a plain rolled edge and is flanked by two Celtic knot panels; the upper panel displays a carving of the Paschal Lamb (Agnus Dei). The cross sits on roughly-hewn stone block plinth, with angled upper surfaces. The front of the plinth contains a recessed ashlar stone panel listing the names of 23 men who died in the First World War and five who died in the Second World War. A rectangular stone flower trough with rounded ends is positioned against the front of the podium.
