Description

Fox Hill Cottage and attached walls and gates is a lodge built around 1862 by George Corson for FW Tetley. It forms a group value feature with the nearby Fox Hill house. Constructed of coursed squared gritstone with a slate roof, it also features ashlar piers, wooden rails and gates. The lodge is single-storey, with an upper floor incorporated into the roof. The architectural style is Gothic Revival. The front facade, facing the drive, has a round-arched doorway on the left and a rectangular bay window with stone mullions and a slate roof on the right. A small gable dormer is positioned above the bay window, featuring two lights divided by a short column and a wrought-iron finial. The left return, facing the road, has a gable with three-light stone mullion windows. A short wing is set back on the left, with a steep, lean-to roof and a gable dormer matching the front. A prominent chimney with a row of four circular stone shafts and a crenellated top is located on the right. A circular stair turret is situated in the angle, featuring a high conical roof and a finial. The interior of the lodge has not been inspected. The property is surrounded by low, curved walls with inner and outer piers; the inner piers have a deep cornice and banded ball finials. The original two-leaf ramped gates have strap hinges, close-set bars, dog bars, and semicircular braces, although they may have been replaced in the early 20th century when S Kitson made alterations to Fox Hill.
