Description
The Algernon Firth Institute of Pathology is an institute completed in 1932, designed by John C Procter. It is constructed from grey-brown coarse brick and reinforced concrete, featuring a keyed doorcase made of Portland stone and a flat roof. The building has three storeys, with a projecting central entrance and staircase bay, seven window flanking bays, and a recessed outer one-window bay. The windows are set in full-height dentilled recesses that include panels of herringbone brickwork. The interior has not been inspected. This building is noted as an early example of the use of reinforced concrete and was used for pathology, bacteriology, and cancer research. John C Procter, a fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, also designed the lighting for Studio 1 at Broadcasting House in Leeds in 1934.
