Description
The Banqueting House in the grounds of Batley Hall is presumed to be a banqueting house or garden house, dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of brick with plastered, mullioned and transomed chamfered windows, and features a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of a small single cell with a lean-to stair turret at the rear (west).
There is a two-course string course between the floors and corbelling at the eaves that continues across the gables. The east and south elevations each have a central arched doorway flanked by pilasters with moulded brick volutes, although these are badly eroded, and brick capitals at the string level. The south side has corner pilasters. The east doorway is flanked by a cross window on the left and a single light with a transom on the right. The south doorway has a single light with a transom on each side.
At the first floor level of both main facades, there is a central six-light mullioned and transomed window, with flanking pilasters, although only the south side has capitals. Each side features two bays with a distinctive raised brick diamond patterning in sunk panels, which is also present in panels below the windows, though some have been blocked at a later date. There is a six-light mullioned and transomed window on the north side.
Some original plastering around the windows remains, but it is in poor condition, and much of the brick detailing is very badly eroded. The roof timbers appear to be original, but the roof and stairs of the turret are gone, and most windows are now blocked. The building showcases an unusually elaborate treatment using unusual materials.
