Description

St Paul's Hall, located at the University of Huddersfield, was built in 1829 and designed by either John Oates or Joseph Kaye. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a pitched slate roof. It includes a nave with aisles, a chancel, a vestry, and a west tower, all adorned with parapets and diagonal buttresses at the corners topped with pinnacles. The nave has five bays, while the chancel consists of three bays with a polygonal end. The windows are plain, chamfered, untraceried lancets, some of which have hoodmoulds. The three-stage tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and has a crenellated parapet, topped with an octagonal spire that features two stages of gabled lucanes. The west doors of the aisles are decorated with ogee mouldings and delicate sculpted ornament.

In 1883, a chancel was added, with its foundation stone laid by Lady Gwendolen Ramsden. Inside, the hall has octagonal piers and a tall arcade with a blind triforium arcade, along with clerestory lancets supported by colonettes. The roofs are flat, and the chancel boasts a quadripartite rib vault. There is also a west gallery and a notable neo-classical marble tablet commemorating Edward Learoyd, who died in 1857.
