Description
Belle Vue, originally built as a private residence for Sir Frank Crossley between 1856 and 1857, is a public library located on Hopwood Lane. Designed by G H Stokes, the stone mansion reflects a later 17th century to early 18th century French architectural style. The building has two main storeys and features a prominent tripartite center with a pediment, flanked by three windows on either side. The ground floor is accentuated by rusticated strip pilasters, while an order of Ionic pilasters adorns the upper level. The steep hipped roof is covered with slate and includes shaped dormer windows and chimney stacks. A Doric carriage porch with a segmental pediment is located on the short south return. The original house, which is a simpler structure, is connected to a long screen wall that once enclosed the service yard. The north elevation has five windows and features wrought iron railings on first-floor balconies, with segmental pediments at either end. A notable iron-framed conservatory extends from the building, showcasing arcading, an arched roof, and a bowed end. The interior contains decorative elements of interest, particularly the arched corridors on both floors and a grand marble staircase with an arcaded upper section. The original house itself is not of significant interest.
