Description

Long Can is a substantial stone house dated 1637, situated on Ovenden Wood Road. The house exhibits traditional stone construction with a stone roof. The south front is long and irregular, extending over two storeys and featuring a two-storey porch topped by a parapet and finials. The porch incorporates both arched inner and a more elaborate outer doorway. Above the inner doorway is a dated lintel inscribed "IMM." Mullioned windows with dripmoulds are present, with a stepped and transomed window incorporating a gable above it, located to the west of the porch. A gabled crosswing extends beyond this, with less significant outbuildings positioned in front. Later doorways have been added. The east return is irregular and gabled. The north side features simpler mullioned windows and two gabled crosswings, mirroring the arrangement on the front. A lean-to structure connects the crosswings. At the time of inspection, the house was in use as a store. A doorway at number 6 has stone above it, dated 1708 and inscribed “IMS.”
