Description
The Church of All Souls, built in 1856 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, is an exceptionally fine and large stone cruciform building designed in the style of the 13th and 14th centuries. It features an aisled nave with a clerestory, transepts, and a chancel that has separately gabled side chapels. The church includes a south porch and a northwest tower topped with a tall stone spire. The exterior is adorned with carved figures and other decorative elements, and the roofs are slated.
Inside, the church has carved caps on the nave piers, an arcaded clerestory, and open timber roofs with transverse arches over the aisles. There is a vaulted baptistery located under the tower. The interior fittings are of excellent quality, including the chancel front, pulpit, lectern, screen and gates, reredos, and tiled pavement. The stained glass, created by Clayton and Bell among others, is particularly notable in the sanctuary and the large west window.
