Description
Lower Stainborough Fold Farmhouse and The Cottage are late 18th-century farm buildings, originally constructed for the Wentworth Castle estate. They have been altered in 1985 and are now divided into two dwellings. The buildings are constructed of dressed sandstone with a stone slate roof.
The main farmhouse is partly two storeys and three bays wide. The central bay projects forward and has a 20th-century single-storey addition with a French window beneath a gable. The main gable features two 20th-century casement windows within a basket-arched panel that breaks into an ashlar-coped open pediment. The single-storey bays to either side each feature a 20th-century casement beneath a round-arched panel; the bay to the right has been rendered with cement. A truncated ashlar ridge stack sits centrally, flanked by smaller ridge stacks. The rear of the farmhouse includes a two-bay wing and a narrower brick addition. The wing has sashes and casements, and an end stack.
The interior of the farmhouse includes two corniced ashlar fireplaces, one with an elaborate architrave, which has been moved from its original location in the return end wall. According to a previous listing description, the architect John Platt, who worked for the Earl of Strafford, may have been involved in the building’s design.
