Description
Thomas Gent's Coffee House is a former house, now a café, located in York. It dates back to around 1700, with some alterations made in the early 19th century and a renovation around 1990. The building features orange brick laid in stretcher bond on a brick plinth, a timber doorcase, and a hipped pantile roof adorned with iron corner scrolls and brick stacks. It has dormer windows with squat 6-pane sash windows.
The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and has a three-window front. The doorcase, which has pilasters and a cornice, includes a faceted frieze with blocks, a six-fielded panel door, and a diamond lattice overlight. All windows have been replaced with 16-pane sashes that feature timber sills and renewed flat arches made of orange gauged brick. The ground floor windows are fitted with two-panel shutters. A band of four raised brick courses runs along the first floor.
On the right side of the building, there is an inserted shopfront with sunk-panel pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice, which includes a glazed and panelled door and a small-pane window. At the far right, there is a six-fielded panel door with a divided overlight. On the first floor, two renewed 16-pane sash windows are present, with the left window flanked by shallow brick pilasters. A four-course raised brick band is also visible at the first floor level.
Inside, the building features stop-chamfered beams on both the ground and first floors.
