Description
This lamp standard, located approximately 12 metres north of Number 10 in Owston Ferry Market Place, was erected in 1866 for Frances Sandars. It features an ashlar base and a cast-iron pedestal and lamp, with a square plan. The lamp standard has a moulded stepped base and a square pedestal that includes a moulded plinth and cornice. On the north side, there is a plate inscribed with "THE GIFT OF FRANCES SANDARS 1866." Above this, a slender fluted column supports an octagonal base and a lamp topped with a domed cap. The lamp is currently in working order and was originally lit by gas from the village gasworks. Frances Sandars was a local benefactor known for founding the Almshouses in Bagsby Lane and for providing various gifts to the church, including the archway to the churchyard.
