Description

The Town Hall, built around 1817, is a small two-storey building located at a road junction on the east side of the Market Place. It is constructed of yellow brick and has a slate roof. The elevation facing the Market Place features three sides, each with an upper rectangular window and a lower round-headed window, all adorned with keystones. The ground floor has modern glazing. A reeded door case is topped with an open modillion pediment. There are stucco bands between the storeys and below a small brick and stucco parapet that has a panel on each face. A rectangular painted wood clock turret with pilasters and a cornice is present, topped with a ball finial and weather vane. The side elevation includes five windows beneath a modillion cornice, and the doorcase has fluted side columns that have been restored. The ground floor features a triple arcade and a bowed shop window with a dentil cornice and fascia. At the time of the survey, the building was undergoing restoration. There is an eastward extension of similar design and date to the Town Hall, also two storeys, built of yellow brick with a Welsh slate roof at an angle, stone coped gable ends with kneelers, and three windows with segmental arches and renewed glazing bars. The shop front has plain pilasters across the entire ground floor. The Town Hall and the premises occupied by E Hounslow and W H Smith form a group.
