Description
Corporation Bridge is an electrically-powered Sherzer rolling lift road bridge built in 1925 by Alfred C Gardner, who was the Docks Engineer for the London and North Eastern Railway, with construction carried out by Sir William Arrol & Co. of Glasgow for Grimsby Corporation. The bridge was restored around 1980. It is constructed from cast iron and steel, featuring a timber-clad control box, and has brick and ashlar abutments. The structure comprises four spans that rest on short cylindrical piers, with timber buffers on the piers flanking the lifting bascule over the main channel.
The bridge is adorned with lattice girder parapets that ramp up to the lifting section. Ornate cast-iron piers are positioned above the abutments, each featuring a plinth, a moulded cornice, and lamp standards. The plinths include plaques on two sides, with the north-east plinth displaying a commemorative inscription that records the construction details and the opening of the bridge by HRH the Prince of Wales on 19 July 1925. The other plinths feature polychrome painted reliefs of the Grimsby Corporation Arms. The makers' names on the girders include Skinningrove, Frodingham Iron and Steel Co., and Dalzell Steel GK. The control box has a wrap-around window with glazing bars and a hipped roof with a ridge louvre. This bridge spans the dock near Victoria Mills on Victoria Street and replaced a swing bridge.
