Description
Huntsman's Obelisk is a monument located in a railed enclosure approximately 30 metres north-east of the Church of Saint Helen. It was erected in 1861 in memory of William Smith. The monument features a granite obelisk that stands about 4 metres high, set on a chamfered marble pedestal with two inscribed plaques. The base consists of a chamfered granite plinth. The obelisk is surrounded by a square enclosure measuring approximately 4 metres on each side, which has a flagstone floor and cast iron railings. The railings have ornate corner posts and plain bars, with mid- and top-rails, although the top-rails are significantly damaged. One plaque commemorates Smith, who was the Huntsman to the Earl of Yarborough, and notes that he fell from his horse on April 11, 1845, dying on April 16 at the home of Richard Nainby, who provided the site for the memorial. The second plaque features a 22-line ode to Smith by CHJA.
