Description
This is a well located approximately 50 metres south-east of Hall Farmhouse, likely dating from the 18th century but with earlier, possibly medieval, origins. It features a brick and ashlar chamber surrounded by late 19th to early 20th century railings that are not of special interest. The well has an L-shaped plan, with brick walls flanking a flight of eight stone steps, the top step being made of 20th century concrete. The small chamber is about 1.7 metres high and 1.2 metres square, with a brick segmental-arched barrel vault and a flagstone floor. There is a similar-sized chamber at right angles to the left, approximately 1.5 metres high, featuring a round-arched barrel vault and brick walls above an ashlar lower section that contains the well, which is about 90 centimetres deep. Locally, this well is known as "The Roman Well."
