Description
Nos 98 and 100 on Walkergate are a pair of red brick cottages built around 1780-1790. They are double fronted, two storeys high with an attic, featuring two windows on each floor. The windows are two-light sliding sashes with glazing bars and segmental brick arches above them. The cottages have a steeply pitched modern pantile roof, which includes modern dormers and a dentil eaves cornice. There are two new doors with six fielded panels set in segmental-headed doorways, accompanied by four-pane fanlights. The gable end of No 100 displays tumbled brickwork. An early 19th-century shop window was removed during restoration work in 1974. Inside, the cottages retain original plain staircases, doors, doorcases, and chimney pieces, with some featuring carron grates. No 100 also has an original glazed china cabinet fitted into the chimney breast.
