Description
The gateway to Beverley Gas Works, built around 1826 for J Malam, is a Grade II listed structure in a classical style. It is made of sandstone and measures approximately 20 feet wide and 25 feet high. The gateway features coupled Doric pilasters that rest on a projecting base on either side of a central opening, which is spanned by a semi-circular arch. A continuous entablature and architrave are adorned with guttae, and there is a plain cornice with a blocking course that is broken forward and raised higher in the center. The same elevation design is mirrored on the inside, with the coupled pilasters and entablature returning around each end. This gateway serves as a prominent feature for those approaching from Hull.
