Description

A cart-shed and granary range, with a blacksmith's shop, stables, and stablehands' lodgings, was built in 1849 for William Marshall. The building is constructed of orange-brown brick with orange rubbed-brick dressings, and has a pantile roof. It forms the east side of the farmyard.

The range is rectangular in plan, comprising a central cart-shed section with a blacksmith's shop to the left and stables to the right. A granary and stablehands’ lodgings are set above. It is two storeys high. The west side has six first-floor openings. The ground floor features six segmental-headed cart openings (three open, three with double board doors), a stable door, a two-light window with vertical glazing bars, a stable door, a pair of board doors (one with a five-pane overlight, the other with a blind six-pane overlight), and three two-light windows. All openings are defined by segmental arches. The first floor has three louvred hatches (one with a board door), two twelve-pane sliding sashes, and another board door. The roof is hipped, with an axial stack to the right and an end stack to the left. The east side has a six-bay, single-storey lean-to cart-shed, with a roof supported on square brick piers. The blacksmith's shop retains original forge fittings. The building is part of a large early industrial farm.
