Description

Ann Routh's Almshouses, built in 1750, were designed by James Moyser and constructed by Thomas Wrightson. This two-storey building is made of red brick and features an elevation to Keldgate with three bays that are divided by pilasters topped with stone caps and projecting bases. The pilasters support semi-circular gauged arches. On the first floor, there are three segmental-headed windows, while the ground floor has two windows and a central doorway framed by a plain stone architrave, which includes a four-panel door and a fanlight. All windows have gauged heads and stone cills.

Above, there is a moulded stone eaves cornice, and a full-width pediment with similar raked cornices. The tympanum displays a fine Rococo cartouche of arms, which is coloured and framed by cornucopia, c-scrolls, and palm leaves. This cartouche rests on a tablet inscribed with a dedication to Ann Routh, detailing the establishment of the almshouses for the maintenance of twelve poor old widows of the parish.

Inside, the staircase features a closed string, symmetrically turned vase-shaped balusters, plain newels, and a simply moulded handrail. This staircase appears to have been rebuilt to its original design in the early 19th century. Additionally, there is a firemark of the Sun Assurance company present on the building.
