Description

The Sunk Island War Memorial stands on the western side of Sunk Island Road, opposite the Church of the Holy Trinity. It is enclosed to the south by a pre-existing wall and gate pier that marks the entrance to the school house garden. The freestanding memorial is approximately 3m tall and takes the form of a cross-shaped monument mounted on a square shaft with chamfered and stopped corners. The cross is raised on a square die base, also with chamfered and stopped corners, and is set on a two-stepped podium resting on a square concrete raft foundation. The memorial faces east. A dark grey granite panel attached to the east face of the base is dedicated to those who died in the First World War and bears the inscription "IN GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO DIED/ FOR GOD, KING & EMPIRE/ 1914 - 1919/ (3 NAMES)/ THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE."

A roll of honour, also split over two dark grey granite panels attached to the south and north sides of the base, lists the names of those from the parish who served in the First World War. The panels read "SERVED GOD, KING & EMPIRE/ 1914 - 1919" followed by a list of names on each side. A secondary, canted dark grey granite memorial panel on the first step of the podium commemorates those who died in the Second World War, with the inscription "IN EVER/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945/ (5 NAMES)/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." The face of the first step of the podium is inscribed with the name of the monumental masons 'EVERINGHAM HEDON'. The pre-existing wall and gate post, which form the entrance to the school house garden, are not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest.
