Description

The Old School is a school building constructed in 1857 by S S Teulon for the Crown Commissioners, with 20th-century additions and alterations. It is made of red brick in Flemish bond and has been colour-washed on the south side. The roof is banded slate and the building has a T-shaped plan, featuring a schoolroom with a contemporary north central wing that was extended in the 20th century, a later extension to the east, and an original lean-to section adjoining the schoolhouse to the west. The entrance faces a yard to the north and the building is single storey.

On the south side, there are six windows with irregular fenestration, a chamfered plinth, and an external stack to the left of centre with tumbled-in brick at the offsets. There is a segmental-pointed recessed panel with a tablet bearing a crown, royal cypher, and the date, along with a tall chimney shaft that has a black brick cornice and a square pot. To the left, there is a 20th-century tripartite window with glazing bars, a small lancet window in the lean-to, and an ashlar string course. To the right, there is a similar tripartite window and three 15-pane windows. All windows feature rounded-chamfered sills and brick arches. The eaves overhang with exposed rafter ends, and the roof is hipped to the right.

A diagonally-set square bell turret is corbelled out to the left gable, with a splayed base and buttresses flanking segmental-arched openings on each side. It also has an ashlar string course and a polygonal brick spire topped with a weather-vane. On the north side, the main range has four lancets to the right, while the central wing features triple lancets on each side, an inserted door at the north-west angle, and an inserted garage door at the north end, with a hipped roof. The Old School is part of a series of 19th-century Crown estate buildings designed by Teulon and is included for its group value.
