Description
Dower House, located approximately 100 metres north-east of Cowick Hall, is a house that has been converted into offices. It was built around 1870 for the Shaw family and has had additions made to the rear around 1980, which match the original style and materials. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with sandstone ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof.
The house has a two-room central entrance-hall plan with an extended wing to the rear left. It is two storeys high and has three symmetrical bays with quoins. The entrance features a six-panelled door with an overlight set in an ashlar architrave, supported by scrolled brackets that carry a cornice and hood. The windows are 12-pane sashes in ashlar architraves, complete with sills and moulded cornices. The eaves have a dentilled brick course, topped by an ashlar cyma-moulded cornice, and the roof is hipped with end stacks.
On the right return, there is a round-headed sash window with margin lights, a keyed arch, and an ashlar sill. Inside, the house features an open well staircase with turned balusters, moulded cornices, pilastered chimney-pieces, and panelled doors in architraves. The building is included for its group value.
